Instead of standing in the narrow, musty hall, Kai and Harry went out to the front garden. Harry stowed Kai’s bag into the boot of the Porsche then rejoined him on the crumbling path. Kai grabbed his hand and held on tight. Harry rubbed Kai’s palm with his thumb. After a couple of minutes, Blair came and joined them.

“Do you have everything you want to take, Kai? Your uncle has informed me that he intends to put this property on the market shortly, so this will probably be your only chance.”

Kai frowned. “There’s a tin in the kitchen drawer that might have some documents of mine in it. I’d better check.”

“You do that. There are a few things I need to discuss with Harry.”

Harry held tight to Kai’s hand. “Wait— Do you want me to come with you?”

“No, I can do this. I won’t be long.”

The moment Kai let go of Harry’s hand, he regretted his bravado. It would have been far better to admit his fear and let Harry accompany him back into the house, but that would have been ridiculous. He was a grown man, not a baby.

I can do this. I’m not a scared boy anymore. Kai walked through to the kitchen and tugged at the drawer that housed the tin he remembered. It was stuck and he had to yank hard to open it. It gave way suddenly, came free of its housing and landed with a crash on the scuffed linoleum, spilling the contents everywhere.

“Damn, damn, damn.” Kai quickly scooped everything up and dumped the assorted rubbish back in the drawer. He lifted it onto the kitchen counter and rummaged through bits of string, loose batteries and bundles of coupons. The battered tin was still there. It had once contained shortbread or something similar and his frugal Uncle had long ago declared it to be the perfect size for paperwork.

Kai lifted the tin out of the drawer and prized open the lid. He started to sift through the contents, picking out his birth certificate and a couple of old school photos. He registered a creak behind him, started to turn but was brought to an abrupt halt by a stranglehold around his neck. His uncle was a big man, too strong to fight. Kai gasped as he was shoved against the kitchen cabinets and bent forward. A drawer handle dug into his abdomen.

“What the fuck are you doing in here, you little shit?” His uncle’s voice was full of hate. Kai choked and tried to draw a breath. His vision was starting to fade as his air supply was cut off. He tried to shove back against his uncle’s bulk.

“Listen to me and listen good. I don’t want to hear another peep from that smarmy lawyer you’ve got babysitting you. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll get out of here and disappear, you fucking deviant. I thought I’d beaten some sense into you, but no. You had to come back. Digging up the past will get you killed, boy.
